Sulfur Trioxide and Sulfuric Acid 5. Potential for Human Exposure

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Sulfuric acid is a common chemical that is widely used in industry and is found in consumer products (e.g., car batteries, cleaning products). In the United States sulfuric acid is ranked number one in terms of production volume. Sulfur trioxide is a precursor to the production of sulfuric acid. Oleum (fuming sulfuric acid) is sulfur trioxide absorbed in concentrated sulfuric acid. Sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid are sometimes released to the environment during production and use. Sulfur dioxide released during the burning of fossil fuels is also a major source of atmospheric sulfuric acid. In the atmosphere, sulfuric acid is generally in the form of small droplets, or it is adsorbed onto small particles. Sulfuric acid leaves the air through dry and wet deposition processes. Because of it’s widespread use, and the widespread release of sulfur dioxide, the potential for human exposure to sulfuric acid is substantial.

Sulfur Trioxide and Oleum

Sulfur trioxide (SO3) and oleums are generally aggressive materials with complicated properties. They are widely used in the process industries. Their main feature is the violent reaction of SO3 and water that occurs in both the liquid and the vapor phase. Oleum (or fuming sulfuric acid) is a solution of sulfur trioxide in 100% sulfuric acid. Its strength is expressed as weight percentage free ...

Determination of sulfur trioxide in engine exhaust.

Sulfur trioxide in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine is removed and concentrated by absorption in a solution of 80% isopropyl alcohol, which quantitatively absorbs it and inhibits the oxidation of any sulfur dioxide which may be absorbed. The absorbed sulfur trioxide (sulfuric acid) is determined by an absorption titration by using barium chloride as the titrant and thorin as the...

Oxidation of sulfur dioxide over supported vanadia catalysts: molecular structure ± reactivity relationships and reaction kinetics

The oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide over supported vanadium oxide catalysts occurs as both a primary and secondary reaction in many industrial processes, e.g., the manufacture of sulfuric acid, the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia and the regeneration of petroleum re®nery cracking catalysts. This paper discusses the fundamental information currently available con...

Direct Sulfonation of Methane to Methanesulfonic Acid by Sulfur Trioxide Catalyzed by Cerium(IV) Sulfate in the Presence of Molecular Oxygen

Direct sulfonation of methane with SO3 to methanesulfonic acid (MSA) is accomplished in sulfuric acid with almost 100% selectivity in the presence of a catalyst, namely, Ce and Rh salts and molecular oxygen as the catalyst regenerator. In the absence of O2, the catalyst remains effective but the selectivity to MSA decreases to 53% and byproducts, principally CH3OSO3H, are formed. The effects of...

Toward elimination of discrepancies between theory and experiment: the rate constant of the atmospheric conversion of SO3 to H2SO4.

The hydration rate constant of sulfur trioxide to sulfuric acid is shown to depend sensitively on water vapor pressure. In the 1:1 SO3-H2O complex, the rate is predicted to be slower by about 25 orders of magnitude compared with laboratory results [Lovejoy, E. R., Hanson, D. R. & Huey, L. G. (1996) J. Phys. Chem. 100, 19911-19916; Jayne, J. T., Poschl, U., Chen, Y.-m., Dai, D., Molina, L. T., W...
